Open Range was founded by Paul Hyatt in 1997 operating as a sole proprietorship. Open Range Enterprises incorporated as a Colorado corporation in 2000 and operated until 2007. On re-locating to Wichita Kansas in late 2007, Open Range, Inc. was incorporated in January 2008.

Prior to 1997, Hyatt was a senior software developer and system architect for fourteen years in a wide range of markets and industries. Hyatt holds a Master of Science (MS) in Computer Science from Georgia Tech ('83), Atlanta, GA, and Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mathematics from Appalachian State University ('81), Boone, NC.
